When choosing an Asphalt or Pavement Maintenance Contractor, it is important to know what to look for in a quality pavement repair job. Adherance to the following quality specifications can make the difference between a long lasting, quality repair and a low quality repair that will not last. Knowing your contractor and the industry standards can save you time, money and frustration.

Asphalt Repair
Cut edges of area of damaged by mechanical means. Corners of repair area to be at right angles, whenever possible. Remove existing pavement that has failed. Compact subgrade, wet or damaged subgrade material shall be removed and replaced with suitable material, (treated soil, crushed stone or concrete). Subgrade shall be of consistent depth through out repair area. Edges of repair areas shall have vertical edges, cleaned and tacked with emulsified asphalt for adhesion. Place hot mix asphalt in lifts not exceeding 3” per lift.
Hot mixed asphalt shall meet or exceed current KDOT specifications. Placed hot mixed asphalt shall be compacted to a minimum density of 96%.
Crack Seal Specifications for Asphalt Pavement
Clean dirt, vegetation and other debris from cracks using compressed air, wire brushes or other mechanical means. Before sealing, cracks shall be completely dry of all moisture. Pavement surface temperatures should be above 40 degrees F. Air compressors used for cleaning and blowing cracks will have filters to remove water and oil from air.
Crack sealer shall meet ASTM specifications 1190 or 3405. Follow manufacture recommendations for maximum heating temperatures, material shall not be overheated. Heat materials in jacketed double boiler type melting unit, that is equipped with both agitation and recirculation systems.
Crack sealing procedure is to slightly overfill cracks and then neatly level sealant material with squeege in a narrow band (2” to 4” wide). Crack seal material shall be even with or just slightly below surface of asphalt pavement. Minimum size of crack to be sealed should be ¼” wide. Sealant should have a minimum of 1 to 1 ratio height to width dimension.
Coal Tar Seal for Asphalt Pavement.
Before placing coal tar sealer, clean pavement of any dirt or debris. The asphalt pavement shall be free of all standing water before sealing.
In areas that oil for vehicles has dripped on pavement and has not damaged pavement, prime asphalt pavement with product recommended by manufacturer of coal tar sealer. If pavement has become soft from oil, areas will need to be removed to the depth of damage, and replaced with new pavement before applying coal tar sealer. New asphalt pavement shall be allowed to age for approximately 30 to 45 days before sealing.
Coal tar sealer shall meet RP355e federal specifications. Coal tar sealer when received in concentrated form shall be diluted with water no more than 20% by amount of concentrated sealer. Coal tar to be modified with a latex additive recommended by manufacturer of coal tar sealer. This amount shall be 2% of concentrated sealer. #2 silica sand shall be added to mixture at a rate of 3 to 4 pounds of silica sand per gallon of sealer.
The equipment used in mixing shall be capable of combining material into a homogenous mixture before applying. Equipment shall be able to apply coal tar mixture by squeege or spray at a uniform rate.
Coal tar mixture shall be applied in two coats. Application rate shall be .10 to 0.14 gallons of concentrated coal tar sealer per square yard total for both coats with no more than 0.7gallon per coat. The first coat shall be dry to touch before applying second coat. All traffic shall be keep off pavement until sealer has sufficiently cured, usually 24 hours at 50% humidity and 70 degree F. temperature.
Pavement Marking Paint
Painting shall be performed only when pavement surface is dry, and clean, when the outside temperature is above 40 degrees F. and when the weather is not excessively windy, dusty or foggy.
The mechanical equipment shall be an approved atomizing spray type-marking machine, suitable for application of traffic paint. Shall produce an even and uniform film thickness for required coverage.
Paint shall meet TT-P-1952D for water based paint. Film thickness shall be no less than 3 mills. Application rate would be 100 to 105 sqft per gallon of paint.
